Best eBay Business Practices: The "About Me" Page
One of the most overlooked 'Best eBay Business Practices' is building trust using the 'About Me' page. Many times Sellers do not complete this 'mini website' but try seeing it as a 'free marketing tool' that helps build trust - the more a potential buyer trusts you the more likely they are to purchase from you.
Best eBay Business Practice #1: "Know Thy Neighbour"When I first started selling on eBay I didn't bother with the About Me page, thinking who would bother looking at it anyway! But then I followed the 'free marketing' idea and did a very basic one, with a bit of text about my retail business (as was), my feedback and my listings showing. On checking through my statistics for the month, I was more than surprised to find that the About Me page was the most visited! This completely shocked me, but it goes to show that people want to know who they are buying from - the more you get to know a person, even if just from text on a page, the more likely you are to buy from them as opposed to a faceless stranger. Speaking of faces, try put your picture up if you can (a smiling one). Also include testimonials from previous buyers, as well as your feedback. Talk to your visitor as if they are stood in front of you - speak TO them not AT them. Use 'I' or 'we' and not 'Joe Bloggs has 13 years experience of fashion retail" etc. Instead say 'I have been in the fashion retail business for over 13 years...' Engage them, don't put formal barriers between the two of you. Be as open as you can, provide as much helpful information as you can - you could maybe have a mini article/tips in there to give something useful to your potential customer - "give before you receive" eBay Sellers in certain countries or in certain 'categories' can now use Skype VOIP to help sales (i.e. being able to phone people over the internet). By putting a Skype button on your listings etc your potential customer can contact you straight away, either by chat or phone, if they have any queries - mega trust building!
Best eBay Business Practice #2: "Get Sticky with Your Visitors"Another reason to do your About Me page is that apparently, the length of time a person spends on your site directly correlates with how likely they are to buy from you. It's like the 'getting to know you' factor, again helping to breed trust. So providing more 'stickiness' and extra information is going to keep them 'with you' longer than an eBay seller with no About Me page.
