Work from Home - Diary of a WAHM

Work at Home Toolkit.com : Toolkit News Blog Homepage : June 2007

June 7, 2007 15:45 - Working from Home on the Homepage

My work from home site is a constant source of annoyance to me. I need to sit down and really go for it - at the moment I have lots written in draft and the few pages that are up there make me cringe!

So, I made a few cosmetic changes to a few pages - the first being the home page. I hated that. Now I quite like it!

The Homepage

The biggest change is the addition of my little 'why I work from home online' video, as well as a new graphic which incorporates my mugshot (in the hope that my 'genuine smile' may convey a sense of 'look this IS real, I'm an honest gal and not trying to scam you'

Currently the homepage has these stats:

  • Google Page Rank = 2/10
  • Alexa rank = 1,868,834 (this has slipped waaaay down!)
  • Google position, ranked >30 (i.e. not in the first 3 pages)
  • In fact most of the pages are indexed but all >30

I also added more text, which meant I had to add more keywords - so it will be interesting to see if this helps.

The 'Work at Home Jobs - Overview' Page

Again I don't particularly like and needs lots of internal links adding in, I decided to remove the Google Adsense ads - they had only made $25 since Jan 07 and were often exactly what I preach against! i.e. make thousands of dollars by the weekend; this doesn't look good sat next to my 'avoid get rich quick' advice! So, it is worth losing a few dollars a month to increase my credibility.

The 'No Cheese, Please!' Newsletter

I have a grand total of 4 people on my newsletter, which I was amazed at! I don't work on this site and I don't think I'd be inspired to join up!
make money online with no cheese please

Anyway, I updated the sign up page with my new 'No Cheese, Please!' logo (and yeah it's meant to look badly drawn!) and put some proper data in for my keywords and description (didn't have ANY!)

I also decided NOT to offer an freebie incentive to sign up - I want people siging up for the practical WORKABLE and REAL information I have to share, not for some freebie they will never read anyway.

If you would like to sign up, Dear Reader....click the cheese ;-)

June 29, 2007 12:02 - WOW! New Keyword Targeting and More Referrals on Google Adsense

Google Adsense is getting SO much better...

I make money from referring Google's own products and earlier this week I noticed with glee that we can now refer Google Checkout and Google Apps.

But then today....I read about 'Referrals 2.0' and the whole show is going to be MUCH improved.

Up to now, we mostly just had to take whatever adverts Adsense gave us, and that sometimes made you cringe! But it seems that now we can specifiy targeted keywords so that my 'card making' site will hopefully be able to target specific craft products/shops and not be at the mercy of the occassional 'business card making' or 'credit card' ads showing up. Once had a video ad for Jackass...no idea what that was all about! But it certainly didn't fit my site!

If I'm understanding all this correctly, this is FANTASTIC.

And not only can you get more ads that a highly relevant, but you can ENDORSE these products - just like a regular affiliate programme. With normal Adsense for Content you can't say "psssst 'xyz craft supplies' are great, see these links over here, click on it to see their stuff..." I used to write about a certain brand hoping that Adsense would pick up the brand names in the content, showing my visitors some Advertisers who were promoting that brand in their Adwords campaigns. But now, I can endorse preferred products AND Advertisers! Whoohoooooo.

You can click the link below for full details, but here are the main points:

  • More products: products from thousands of AdWords advertisers

  • Category and keyword targeting: narrow down by specific category, advertiser, or product.

  • Optimization: they will serve the ads that are expected to perform best on your site.

  • Better targeting for pages with multiple themes: select unique keywords for each ad unit to narrow the targeting directly.

  • More money for high-quality traffic: if the traffic you refer is more likely to turn into a sale or lead, you will earn more with referrals.

  • Get the click!: endorse the product that you are referring.

Referrals 2.0 will be rolled out to all Adsense accounts over the next few weeks (in referrals-supported languages).

I can't wait!!!
