January 11, 2007 14:18 - 1&1 Web Hosting - Bad Customer Support
1&1 hosting are not my favourite people at the moment - I have been with them for a few years now and, despite their shocking customer service, I had few complaints.
However, they are now threatening to take me to court over 78 GBP - for a service that had been cancelled as far as I was aware.
It turns out that when I cancelled what I thought was my account with them, I had only cancelled the domains ... the hosting contract itself was NOT cancelled. They have what seems a long and complicated process of cancelling anything, involving on screen procedures and then offline faxing ... totally confusing and apparently I missed something/the fax wasn't received or whatever.
But, for the sake of 78 GBP and a genuine mistake/oversight/misunderstanding by a long term customer ...
- 1&1 are going to lose me as a customer on both my accounts with them
- They will also lose any of 'MY' customers either now or in the future, as I will steer them away from 1&1
- Reviews on the net pretty much all say the same thing - 1&1's customer support is bad - they are cheap and cheerful, but poor support (although I did usually find tech support to be good)
- People are using the internet to let others know about their experiences of companies and services - good and bad - so slack standards from the big players will be prime targets - yay for Web 2.0
- Big techie companies like 1&1 need to realise that not all their users are techies ... as more people come online, for whatever reasons, they need to be able to 'speak' to all levels of experience
Because of shoddy support, confusing and prolonged procedures/instructions, 1&1 might get their 78 GBP by taking me to court, but they will be losing more in the long run because of word of mouth and the internet.
Now, for other hosts that I have used and would wholeheartedly recommend:
Site Build It! - 100% Excellent - NOT just hosting, they give you all the tools to build and grow a 'website' and a 'business' - there is NOTHING else like it. I use SBI for this site and my other 'business' sites.
Hostgator - cheap and great service - I use them to host other little bits and pieces
ThinkHost - 'Green Hosting' ... powered by renewable energy - I will be using these guys much more over time as they fit my ethics. Sign up to the Toolkit newsletter and you can get 3 months free!

January 15, 2007 11:40 - YAY! More Milestones - Making Money Online
Making money online IS possible if you go about it the right way.
Last week, my main site (Card Making World) passed 3 milestones:
- 1000 subscribers to my newsletter
- 700 visits in one day
- $20+ from Google Adsense in one day
My site isn't a year old yet either, but already I am making a regular income from Google Adsense - growing each month, simply by writing about what I enjoy.
This is all thanks to the C-T-P-M process taught by Site Build It! (or SBI as it's known).
And, this income is 'passive' - even if I'm not working the websites are earning.
This is NOT get rich quick, you need to put in the work, but me and hundreds of other successful SBIers are proof that it DOES work :-)
